- 1 lb ground beef (lean mix 85/15)
- 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter (melted)
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Garlic powder (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
- Add the ground beef to a skillet over medium heat and cook for 7 to 10 minutes until browned.
- Drain excess fat from the beef.
- Toss in the chopped onion and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent.
- Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the mixture.
- Peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
- Lay half of the potato slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the beef-onion mix over the potatoes.
- Top with remaining potato slices.
- Whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour over the top.
- Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Make ahead by assembling the casserole the night before and refrigerate. Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
