Description

A nostalgic, hearty casserole with layers of tender potatoes, flavorful ground beef, and ooey-gooey cheese, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean mix 85/15)
  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Garlic powder (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
  2. Add the ground beef to a skillet over medium heat and cook for 7 to 10 minutes until browned.
  3. Drain excess fat from the beef.
  4. Toss in the chopped onion and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent.
  5. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the mixture.
  6. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
  7. Lay half of the potato slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  8. Spread the beef-onion mix over the potatoes.
  9. Top with remaining potato slices.
  10. Whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour over the top.
  11. Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly on top.
  12. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  14. Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Make ahead by assembling the casserole the night before and refrigerate. Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
